2020 Summer Reading Requirements

​Grade 9

9A
All entering grade 9A students will choose and read one book from the 9th grade reading list.
Steps:
  1. ​Read a book of your choice from the 9th grade reading list.
  2. Be prepared to discuss and participate in some form of assessment for your book when you return to school.

​9Honors
All entering grade 9 Honors students will read the introduction and PART ONE: “The Gods, the Creation, and the Earliest Heroes” in Mythology by Edith Hamilton AND a book of your choice from the 9th grade reading list.
Steps:
  1. Read the introduction and part 1 of Mythology by Edith Hamilton.
  2. Complete the linked study guide for Mythology.
  3. Read a book of your choice from the 9th grade reading list.
  4. Be prepared to discuss and participate in some form of assessment for your book when you return to school.

​Grade 10

​10A
All entering grade 10A students will choose and read one book from the 10th grade reading list.
Steps:
  1. ​Read a book of your choice from the 10th grade list.
  2. Be prepared to discuss and participate in some form of assessment for your book when you return to school.

10Honors
All entering grade 10 Honors students will read The Crucible by Arthur Miller and will choose and read one book from the 10th grade reading list.
Steps:
  1. Read The Crucible by Arthur Miller
  2. Suggested that you take guided notes to prepare for a test and project in the fall.
  3. Read a book of your choice from the 10th grade reading list.
  4. Be prepared to discuss and participate in some form of assessment for both books when you return to school.

AP Seminar
All entering grade 10/11 AP Seminar students will choose and read one non-fiction book from the list of AP Seminar choices, and complete the assigned tasks. ​
Steps:
  1. Join Google Classroom.
  2. Review the AP Seminar Topic Lense Diagram.
  3. Read a non fiction book and complete the assignment.
  4. Select and complete the news assignment.

​Grade 11

11A
All entering grade 11A students will choose and read one book from the 11th grade reading list.
Steps:
  1. ​Read a book of your choice from the 11th grade reading list.
  2. Be prepared to discuss and participate in some form of assessment for your book when you return to school.

11Honors
All entering grade 11 Honors students will read Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury and one book from the 11th grade reading list.
Steps:
  1. ​Read Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury
  2. Take notes in your books as you read (or on sticky notes)
  3. Read one book from the 11th grade reading list.
  4. Be prepared for an exam when you return to school.

11AP
All entering grade 11 AP students will read either Hidden Figures by Margot Lee Shetterly (adult version) OR The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot, and a book of your choice from the 11th grade list. You will also participate in the New York Times Summer Reading Contest.
Steps:
  1. ​Read either Hidden Figures by Margot Lee Shetterly (adult version) OR The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot
  2. Participate in the New York Times Summer Reading Contest* - SEE LINKED ASSIGNMENT
  3. ​​​Read a book of your choice from the 11th grade reading list.
  4. Be prepared to discuss and participate in some form of assessment for your book when you return to school.
​​​* "Although the New York Times considers this a contest, for the purposes of English 11 AP summer reading the posts are required. To demonstrate your participation, read these directions."

AP Seminar
All entering grade 10/11 AP Seminar students will choose and read one non-fiction book from the list of AP Seminar choices, and complete the assigned tasks. ​
Steps:

  1. Read a book of your choice from the 12th grade reading list.
  2. Read a book of your choice from the 12Honors memoir list.
  3. Be prepared to discuss and participate in some form of assessment for your book when you return to school.

12Creative
All entering Creative 12 students will choose and read one book from 12th grade reading list.
Steps:
  1. Read a book of your choice from the 12th grade reading list.
  2. Be prepared to discuss and participate in some form of assessment for your book when you return to school.

12Creative Honors
All entering Honors Creative 12 students will choose and read one book from 12th grade reading list, as well as, How to Read Literature Like a Professor (Revised) by Thomas C. Foster.
Steps:
  1. Read a book of your choice from the 12th grade reading list.
  2. Be prepared to discuss and participate in some form of assessment for your book when you return to school.
  3. Read How to Read Literature Like a Professor (Revised) by Thomas C. Foster.
  4. Be prepared to work with other honors students to teach the content to the class when you return to school.

12 Literature Using a Multicultural Lens
All entering 12 Literature Using a Multicultural Lens students will choose and read one book from 12th grade reading list.
Steps:
  1. Read a book of your choice from the 12th grade reading list.
  2. Be prepared to discuss and participate in some form of assessment for your book when you return to school.

12 Literature Using a Multicultural Lens Honors
All entering Honors 12 Literature Using a Multicultural Lens students will choose and read one book from 12th grade reading list, as well as, How to Read Literature Like a Professor (Revised) by Thomas C. Foster.
Steps:
  1. Read a book of your choice from the 12th grade reading list.
  2. Be prepared to discuss and participate in some form of assessment for your book when you return to school.
  3. Read How to Read Literature Like a Professor (Revised) by Thomas C. Foster.
  4. Be prepared to work with other honors students to teach the content to the class when you return to school.

12Monsters
All entering grade 12 Monsters, Murder, and Madness will choose and read one book or podcast from the Monster Book List.
Steps:
  1. Read a book/podcast of your choice from the Monster Book List.
  2. Be prepared to discuss and participate in some form of assessment for your book/podcast when you return to school.

12Monsters Honors
All entering grade 12 Monsters, Murder, and Madness Honors will choose and read one book or podcast from the Monster Book List, and read The Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka.
Steps:
  1. ​Read a book/podcast of your choice from the Monster Book List.
  2. Read The Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka.
  3. Be prepared to discuss and participate in some form of assessment for your books/podcast when you return to school.

12AP
All entering 12 AP students will read How to Read Literature Like a Professor (Revised) by Thomas C. Foster, Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte, and one text from the AP reading list that is NOT on our list for 12AP or any other course at Old Rochester.
Steps:
  1. ​Read How to Read Literature Like a Professor (Revised) by Thomas C. Foster
  2. Read Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte
  3. One text from the AP reading list that is NOT on our list for 12AP or any other course at Old Rochester.
  4. Complete the linked assignment
